What is Learning Ability?

Learning is the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, practice, study or being taught. Why do children differ in their progress in the learning? Environmental factors such as neighbourhoods, poverty, characteristics of schools, families, parental education have always been the prime focus for this.

Recent studies showed that genetics makeup also play a role in learning ability and performance in children. The ability to learn can be partially captured by the use of intelligence test. The Intelligence Quotient (IQ) has been the standardized measure of intellectual ability. IQ test has two separate measures, Performance IQ (PIQ) and Verbal IQ (VIQ), with the former encompassing those tests that assess mental capability in dealing with non-verbal skills and latter being more related to verbal skills.

Children

Individuals, especially children during growth development with iron deficiency and anemia, will have difficulties in learning - which would affect their learning ability.

Suggested Lifestyle Changes

Dietary Recommendations:

  1. Consume berries (e.g. strawberry and blueberry) as they are rich in vitamin C which help to slow down age-related cognitive decline and memory loss affecting the learning ability.
  2. Consume fishes (e.g. salmon, mackerel, sardin) rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs) particularly the omega-3 fatty acid. The omega-3 fatty acid helps the brain to build nerve cells which are essential for learning ability.
  3. Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoid which is an antioxidant component. Flavonoid consists of anti-inflammatory properties which may help to increase blood flow to brain tissue, particularly the hippocampus, which are important for preserving memory.
  4. Broccoli consists of choline and vitamin K which are crucial for the brain function. Vitamin K helps to strengthen cognitive ability and choline helps to sharpen the memory. These nutrients are essential for maintaining memory and learning ability.

Lifestyle Recommendations:

  1. Regular practice and continuous learning, such as baking and practicing guitar, will strengthen the grey matter of the brain, which is beneficial for improving learning ability.
  2. Try to practice by teaching others what you have recently learnt (e.g. baking a cupcake). This will help you to have a better understanding of what you have learnt.
  3. Practice what you are currently learning. For instance, practice a new language by speaking to another person and surround yourself with the language by watching more movies in the related language.
  4. Avoid the habit of multitasking as it will cause the loss of focus and attention, as well as reduce learning ability. Thus, it is best to focus on a task rather than focusing on many.
